The KMR group is a research group at CSC, KTH. We are driven by a desire to create new and powerful ways to structure and communicate information in order to support its exformation into knowledge and transmutation into understanding. Our problem domains include educational, industrial as well as administrative settings.

Our research centers around a structured information architecture that we call a Knowledge Manifold. It consists of a number of linked information landscapes (contexts), where one can navigate, search for, annotate and present all kinds of electronically stored information. A KM is constructed by conceptual modeling of a specific knowledge domain in order to capture its underlying thought patterns in the form of context-maps.

We make use of the KM architecture to construct a conceptual web which should function as a human (semantic) interface to the underlying (machine) semantic web.

When used in education, the KM-architecture represents a paradigm shift, away from the traditional teacher-centric, curriculum-based "knowledge-pushing" educational design patterns towards a more learner-centric, "knowledge-pulling" educational architecture based on learner interest and curiosity.

We are participating in an international effort to develop an interactive learning environment based on semantic web technology, open source and open international ICT standards. We call this learning environment a Public Knowledge and Learning Management Environment.

Five different web layersOur contributions to a PKLME

Besides the KM architecture, our contributions to this PKLME includes:

  • The Edutella infrastructure: A democratic (peer-to-peer) network infrastructure for search and retrieval of information about learning resources.
  • The Conzilla concept browser: A knowledge management tool that supports the construction, navigation, annotation and presentation of the information in a knowledge manifold.
  • The SCAM framework: A framework that helps applications to store and share information about learning resources.
  • The SHAME framework: An editor framework that supports an evolving annotation process of learning resources in a way that enables the growth of an “ecosystem” of quality metadata.
  • The Formulator (or SHAMEditorEditor): a tool for editing metadata editors that is built on top of the SHAME framework.
  • The SCAM portfolio (or Confolio): An electronic portfolio system that is built on top of SCAM, SHAME and Edutella, and which supports collaborative and reflective learning techniques.
  • The VWE composer: An environment for composing learning resources and building customized learning modules.

An important design goal of the PKLME is to support the transformation of the teaching role - away from the traditional “knowledge filter” towards more of a “knowledge coach”, i.e. away from “teaching you what I know” and towards “helping you to find out more about the things that you are interested in”. We believe that this provides a way to create sustainable solutions to the current educational crisis.
